just saw this on a fertility site type place. I wasn’t looking for it just happened to see the question.

Can I ovulate without ever seeing a positive OPK (Ovulation Prediction Kit) result?

Yes, it is possible to ovulate without ever seeing a positive OPK (or peak reading on your fertility monitor). OPKs are designed to detect the surge of luteinizing hormone in your urine. This is the last hormone to peak before ovulation and the hormone that is responsible for triggering the rupture of the ovarian sac. LH needs to surge in order for ovulation to occur, but in some cases, the pattern of your surge and the time you test (if you do not manage to capture the surge when you test) will not let you see a positive result. If you have a sharp LH surge, for example, you may take one test before your surge is detectable by your kit and another test when your LH has already begun to trail and is no longer detectable by the kit. Whether or not you see a positive OPK result, it is recommended to keep on having intercourse until ovulation is confirmed by a clear and sustained thermal shift and ovulation is detected on your chart.

so here’s my theory for today: I had the darkest line (not a confirmed positive) on CD 8 and then a fade out. Perhaps earlier that day or late the day before I had the surge, totally possible because you can ovulate 24 to 36 hours after. which would be CD day 11  or 12 if it’s late…so I just have to wait for my temps the next few days to see if my theory is right. this is such trial and error really ha ha  and I just noticed (TMI here again) watery CM…not EWCM yet but hey I may be on to something here….stay tuned for more musings from the ovulation detective….

    Hmm…very interesting….

Maybe that’s what happened to me.

To answer your question from your last post, I do think it’s entirely possible to O early on. Or maybe not O, exactly, but show the signs of it. I’ve read that even ovlulation cramps can occur 2 days before you actually ovulate. So I do think that it’s entirely possible to get a positive OPK.

I’ve also heard that you should test in the morning and at night. It can get expensive though, but it’s the best way to determine when.

    Good Luck!

I think taking your temp as well as doing the OPKs is probably the best way to know for sure (or as close to for sure as you can get). I don’t have the discipline to do my temps. I don’t have a regular sleep/wake schedule and I don’t wake up well enough (not a morning person) to have reliable results.

Have you read about the SME (Sperm Meets Egg) plan? That is sort of what I am doing. I’ve been doing the OPKs but haven’t seen the surge yet, although I am getting other signs that it is coming.

Becky is right, doing the OPKs twice a day (afternoon and evening, as mornings aren’t recommended) is the best bet. I bought a non-name brand but I’ve also seen them for a good price at T@rget.

    you guys are awesome.

Monica—here you go :p it was EWCM yesterday!

my temps were 97.2 to 97.4 CD 1 through CD 10. this morning the temp was 97.7. So I believe if it stays elevated 2 more days (tho I just know I o’d yesterday) I get the pains the day or two before and the CM kinda adds to it.

Becky- 2 of my friends got pregnant having sex the day after their period and the second day after so it’s possible just really rare. I always had a suspicion I O’d early. the 14 day thing didn’t pan out and never has for me I bet I “O” between CD 9 and CD 12 on average. Even tho I have a 28 to 30 day cycle ….

Basil- I set my alarm for 6:15, I take my temp with a digital thermometer that sits next to my bed, when it beeps I turn it off. it keeps the last temp in the memory. I too suck at getting up and am not a morning person and this is the first time I’ve ever temped in my life. and I just looked up the SME plan…I always tell people just do it every other day from 6 days before you think you Ovulate to 4 after…I have a 7 year old, this would not work for me I’b be exhausted and cranky and end up having a two day lapse if I skip one or something. That and it says to test opk on day 10…my opk’s seem to phase out on day 8 or 9 meaning they were poss early on 8 or late on CD7. I’d have to test the last day of a/f and have sex every other day from then til day 20…I have a fairly regular cycle and feel the ovulation pains for 2 days before, I just added temping to kinda ease my mind and narrow it down. that and it means like 4 days of sex instead of possibly 5 to 8 days. My friend got pregnant the 2nd cycle I suggested the SME plan tho…good luck to you guys too!!

now on to how Walker has pissed me off this time. I said if we REALLY want this we have to do the Deed everyday from Sat until I know I O’d for sure…guess who was semi jerky yesterday AND fell asleep in 4 minutes last night?? knowing full well I was ovulating or was going to yesterday? yeah..jerk ass. so if/when A/F comes he’s getting the riot act read to him. IN or OUT…no middle ground. What’s with that when they “want it” they get it or g.od forbid they don’t right??? jerk ass. the 3 days leading up to it had better be enough … men! it’s too bad we need the sperm.
